Lawns
We do not maintain lawns.
You can do it very easily and ecologically by following these tips:
- Mowing height should be 3-4 inches for cool season grasses – this helps the grasses out compete weeds and helps it and the soil retain moisture
- Mow often enough that you’re cutting off no more than 1/3 of the blades each time you mow
- Use a mulching mower and leave clippings on the lawn (it doesn’t cause thatch, a myth). If you mow often enough the clippings wont need to be raked. This also adds nitrogen and nutrients back to the lawn and reduces the need for purchased fertilizers.
- If you water do so infrequently, no more than twice a week, and water deeply
- The Purdue Turf Management program has great resources for lawn care: http://www.agry.purdue.edu/turf/publicat.htm.
